What EFT is Not
EFT is deceptively simple and complex, at the same time. For someone just discovering this branch of Alternative Medicine, a variety of energy psychology, it might be easier to discuss what EFT is not. As with many things, it might be helpful to discuss EFT from the direction of “what EFT is not” in comparison to things you already know.
EFT is NOT the medical practice of psychiatry, psychotherapy, psychoanalysis or any kind of medical talk therapy. More than anything else, you can think of it as a do-it-yourself stress relief technique that is generally applied to a broad range of negative emotions. (Click here for the Top 10 EFT Therapy Mistakes.)
EFT is NOT hypnosis, cognitive-behavioral therapy, NLP, prayer, nor any format or technique with similar protocols, properties or compatible theories that support its philosophy or methodology.
EFT is NOT a substitute or replacement for medical diagnosis or treatment, or professional mental health treatment by authorized and licensed Medical Doctors.
EFT should NOT be used with a severely mentally ill or unstable individual, unless you are a mental health professional who uses EFT in a professional setting. Gary Craig often tells people to not go where they do not belong. This means that while EFT can be used to treat serious emotional problems, extreme situations should be left to the skilled and trained mental health professional.
EFT is NOT a replacement or substitute for medication prescribed by your treating medical doctor. EFT is an energy healing therapy. It is a complementary Alternative Medicine procedure that is part of the growing field of energy psychology.
EFT is NOT a process of exclusion, but of inclusion; it is not a substitute or replacement for learning or applying healthy interpersonal communication skills; learning how to go outward into the world to interact responsibly within social units, interacting, sharing, listening to others thoughtfully and respectfully.
When used responsibly and correctly, what is EFT but the non-invasive adaptation of ancient acupuncture concepts to enhance the emotional peace, promote physical well-being, and fortify spiritual growth and understanding throughout all levels and layers of life. After using EFT as directed by its developer, Gary Craig, you will experience less stress while encountering previously stressful events and memories. With this ability, you will be prepared to live your life and interact with family, friends, co-workers and strangers more productively and more happily.
What is EFT accomplishing for those who tap on personal stress issues? Inclusion, not the isolation or denial, of previously stressful thoughts, feelings and memories. EFT "tappers” experience a newfound sense of peace, forgiveness and understanding with those same issues that previously plagued their minds.
What is EFT most known for among the medical community who use it? Changing lives without the use of medicine or prolonged discussion of psychoanalytic concepts.
Not only that, but it can be done in a way that is unconventional in typical medical practice. All of the great things that Emotional Freedom Technique accomplishes can be done easily and quickly in a traditional office setting, or while doing EFT by phone. Anger, fear, phobias, anxiety, worry, sleeplessness, and general negative emotions are nicely treated with the energy psychology of EFT, in-person or using phone EFT. After perhaps just a few EFT telephone sessions, most people notice they are clearly calmer and controlled in their everyday encounters.
